Satoyama — landscapes shaped by the coexistence of people and wildlife — form a distinctive kind of ecosystem, and Taiwan's are truly unique. In terraced rice fields preserved for over 200 years, crab-eating mongooses emerge and the endemic Taiwan blue magpie takes flight. In Satoyama dotted with orchards and paddies, the elusive, scaly pangolin appears alongside the rare Taiwan leopard cat. For the first time, television cameras also enter the forests of indigenous communities who have long lived deep in the mountains.

This program captures a year in Taiwan's beautiful Satoyama, where human life and wildlife intermingle — an international co-production between NHK and Taiwanese public broadcaster PTS.
