Give as a gift
Alter, in her 40s, suffers from a profound ailment that is eating her inside out. After attempting suicide, she is consulting her therapist Léandro Lecreulx, a specialist in hypnosis, who connects her to her most buried terrifying fears. Léandro is developing unique methods to help his patients deal with their childhood trauma.
The days pass to the rhythm of nightmares and hypnosis sessions. Alter goes back further and further into her past, until the devastating moment that changed everything. Her life is turned upside down as she discovers that her loving and protective mother has always hidden a secret from her.
"This visually mesmerising odyssey by writer and director Aurélia Mengin explores Alter's journey, following her from one bizarre encounter to the next. Even when she's in the real world, it's tenuous, with the effervescent visuals imbuing even the humble gas station with an energy that's equal parts dreamlike to nightmarish. Stars Daure and Anne-Sophie Charron each give a powerful and dynamic performance as Alter - the latter embodying the character's mental unrest and anguish, while the former serves as an anchor to all the bizarre, colorful and occasionally upsetting imagery Mengin and cinematographer Sylvain Rodriguez care to throw at the screen.
Said to be drawn from the real-life experiences of a dear friend of the director, Scarlet Blue is a dizzying, disorienting depiction of schizophrenia. Vertiginous camerawork and the vibrant colour scheme put viewers deep inside Alter's head - eschewing narrative in favour of fidelity to Alter's headspace. It's Beau is Afraid given a French arthouse makeover; the visuals of Mandy without the grindhouse trappings. A troubling, wild, erotic, exotic phantasmagoria." - Joel Harley, HorrorDNA
