On a dying farm in a fictional place called Ash Harbor, John Hardgrave searches for his wife. As he walks through a decimated world reminiscent of the 1930s Dust Bowl disaster, we glimpse a life slowly crushed over a single generation. The barren fields, the dead orchard, and the broken machinery meant to modernize the industry, too expensive to fix and left to rot, stand as remnants of a dream that withered long ago. At a dilapidated barn, filled with moldy hay that serves no purpose since the herd was sold, he finds his wife's body hanging in an empty stall. In his despair, he returns home and discovers the note she left behind an apology, telling him she's with their children now. As he stands in the silence of their empty home, grief consumes him.
