CUMING OUT echoes a struggle I grappled with, a desire to experience what I deemed “normal” aka straight, sexual (mis)adventures in the context of viewing my own bisexuality as something to be ashamed of. Kennedy’s journey is my own- a messy, awkward, and ultimately triumphant embrace of self. This film sheds light on the often overlooked experience of coming out as a Black bisexual woman, steering away from the sensationalized or overly sexualized portrayals of bisexuals often seen in mainstream media. Instead, it focuses on relatable moments filled with very real cringe-inducing awkwardness, heartfelt revelations, and genuine introspection.

Simultaneously, I’ve witnessed firsthand in the men around me how personal insecurities clash with the rigid expectations of Black masculinity, creating a pressure cooker of unspoken emotions and performative strength. I want to create a film that dismantles these walls using the sharpest tool I know: humor. Growing up, humor was more than a coping mechanism- it was a shared language for cracking open tough conversations and confronting unspoken fears we were often too scared to seriously say out loud.

Through humor and heart, CUMING OUT subverts traditional rom-com expectations by presenting a love story between a man and a woman that doesn’t hinge on romance. It challenges stereotypes and common tropes, offering a mirror for those who have faced similar struggles and a window of understanding for those who haven't. At its core, CUMING OUT is a reminder that the journey to happiness isn’t a straight path, but a series of twists and turns that starts with embracing who we truly are. - Jasmine J.
