The Chens are an Amis family living on Taiwan’s eastern coast. As some family members venture into the brush to hunt snails by headlight after a midnight rain, others harvest rice amid the whir of machinery. Back home, as they butcher, clean, and cook them, family members pass on their endangered language to a younger generation and trade ghost stories that echo the fragility of inherited identities.
