At the north end of Slocan Lake in British Columbia lies a wetland once called Bonanza Marsh by settlers, but its original name is Snk̓míp. When a conservation group begins restoring this marsh, they uncover evidence of an ancient Sinixt village, setting off a profound reckoning with the land’s true history.
Snk̓míp Dig Deeper follows a rare collaboration between settler-led Valhalla Foundation for Ecology and the Autonomous Sinixt, led by Matriarch Marilyn James. As tensions rise with off-road vehicle users opposed to habitat protection, the film explores deeper conflicts between colonial land ownership and Indigenous law, dominator culture and nature-first values, erasure and resurgence.
Filmed over six years in Sinixt təmxʷúlaʔxʷ (traditional territory), this documentary offers an unflinching look at ecological restoration as an act of decolonization. Through ceremony, protocol, and partnership, the land begins to heal, and so do those who care for it.
Snk̓míp Dig Deeper challenges settler society to rethink what it means to restore land, recognize the original stewards, and walk the path of reconciliation.
