SYNOPSIS

Beneath the waters of Kasos lies a rich underwater cultural landscape shaped by centuries of maritime history. Through a pioneering research initiative, archaeologists, conservators, and scientists investigate iron artifacts recovered from shipwreck sites and isolated finds, including cannons and anchors dating from the Byzantine to the modern era. Combining underwater fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and innovative cathodic protection techniques, the team applies in situ conservation methods for the first time in Greece, aiming to slow corrosion and preserve these objects within their original environment. Conservation in Depth is a documentary about the meeting of science, technology, and cultural heritage in the depths of the sea.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Stelios Apostolopoulos studied electrical engineering and cinematography in Athens. He is an acclaimed cinematographer & director with 35 years of experience in documentary, fiction, and advertising. Stelios has directed, filmed & co-produced The Call of the Mountain, which won the Prix Via Stella – France 3 at PriMed, Marseille, the Prize for Best Cinematography at the Sole Luna Festival, Sicily , the Audience Award at the Agon Int. Archaeological and Cultural Film Festival and the Mid-Length Award at Halkida Docs.

He is also Greece's most accomplished underwater cinematographer, contributing to more than 100 projects, and a licenced drone operator. Recent award-winning work as DoP includes Dolphin Man, The Journey of Food, A Family Affair, Little Land, 1821, Sayome and A Place Without People. Stelios is the founder/CEO of Out of the Blue underwater filming services and was a founding partner at Anemon Productions until 2018. He then established Aori Films where he produces documentary, fiction, and commercial works. He is an alumnus of Documentary Campus Masterschool and Kids Kino Lab.
