The Cube Phantom, directed by Alan Lau, was created in early 2019 before the Hong Kong protests. Through dance, the film traverses diverse locations across the city to explore questions of identity and belonging. “We use images to declare our yearning for freedom, and our bodies to express a century of Hong Kong’s emotions,” says Lau.
Unlike any Hong Kong film you’ve seen, The Cube Phantom unfolds like a wordless dance poem in ten chapters, each a site-specific performance revealing both the joy and melancholy of the city. Three dancers, their bodies covered in white chalk, move in struggle—are they prisoners, ghosts, corpses, or tortured souls? Inspired by parkour and hip-hop, the choreography flows from Tai O’s waterways to the slopes of Mid-Levels. In the vast, expressionist storm drain, a brutal confrontation unfolds, followed by a cage sequence inspired by Caged Men. The film premiered worldwide at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
