Give as a gift
At South Africa's prestigious Stellenbosch University, a new generation of students arrives at Eendrag, one of the university's most traditional all-male residences. For these young men, university life promises friendship, independence and the excitement of a new beginning — but they soon encounter traditions and structures shaped by a complicated colonial and apartheid past.
As students from different backgrounds and experiences find themselves sharing the same space, questions of identity, belonging and privilege emerge. A racist incident on campus further challenges the community, prompting some students to question the traditions they have inherited and to push for meaningful change.
Through intimate conversations and candid glimpses of life inside Eendrag, Fitting In explores how a generation born after apartheid is confronting the country's unresolved history. Between public calls for greater inclusion and private conversations about what that inclusion really means, the students must negotiate the difficult space between inherited identities and the future they hope to create.
Fabienne Steiner's thoughtful documentary offers a nuanced portrait of a generation navigating South Africa's past while attempting to define what it means to truly belong.
