Ryan is a devoted young father and husband, enjoying an ordinary afternoon with his wife, Laila, and their friends in Cape Town. But when his five-year-old son, Jude, suddenly disappears, a moment of parental panic sends Ryan into a desperate and violent search.

As the immediate crisis unfolds, Ryan's reaction begins to expose the unresolved wounds and buried anger beneath his carefully constructed life. His marriage, friendships and sense of himself are placed under increasing strain as he is forced to confront the experiences that have shaped the man — and father — he has become.

Set against the vibrant but complex world of Cape Town's Cape Flats, The Heart Is a Muscle is a powerful exploration of fatherhood, masculinity, violence and intergenerational trauma. Imran Hamdulay's acclaimed debut feature asks whether we can break the cycles inherited from those who came before us — and whether forgiveness, of ourselves and others, can offer a path towards healing.
