This series of four short films, each&nbsp;featuring Indigenous people working toward environmental solutions in their communities were supported by the Redford Center in collaboration with the&nbsp;<a href="https://thehgbfoundation.org/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(225, 35, 58);">Helen Gurley Brown Foundation</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.patmitchellmedia.com/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(225, 35, 58);">Pat Mitchell</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; Each film features indigenous women at the forefront of decolonization movements and reforestation efforts to protect their culture, land, and the biodiversity that can heal our planet.&nbsp;These inspirational vignettes, produced by and about exceptional women from around the globe, raise awareness of powerful, replicable, women-led environmental solutions happening at a community level. Nuraga Bhumi follows an all-Indigenous women patrol team who have been trained by Gunung Leuser National Park rangers to help protect the forest and their critically endangered tiger relatives in Sumatra, Indonesia. The film highlights the importance of involving Indigenous women in local conservation efforts, and gives a glimpse into what it looks like when women-led Indigenous communities start reclaiming their birthright as land protectors.

Kanenon:we - Original Seeds carries viewers into the Indigenous seed sovereignty movement led by Haudenosaunee women. Prior to European contact there was a rich and vibrant diversity of foods, with women primarily responsible for caretaking of the seeds. Genocidal practices including, boarding schools, land theft, forced relocation, imposed religion and even food warfare contributed to a disconnection from our traditional foods and seeds. Today, Indigenous seed keepers are vigilantly protecting the biodiversity of seeds under threat of Agro-Chemical Giants that currently control over sixty percent of seeds worldwide. This film features Haudenosaunee seed keepers: Rebecca Webster, Angela Ferguson and Rowen White as they step back into their sacred responsibility as seed keepers offering a powerful view of what is possible in Indigenous communities working towards food sovereignty.

Kanenon:we - Original Seed

Kanenon:we – Original Seeds is the story of Indigenous women reconnecting with their seed relatives on a journey to ensure their viability for for future generations.

In the mountains of Michoacán, Mexico, the Indigenous town of Cherán did what no one thought possible: it kicked out the cartels, shut down illegal logging, and took back control of its future. "Enraizados" (Our Roots Remain) follows the community’s transformation from uprising to self-rule through the lives of three generations shaped by the movement. Susy, a teenage street artist, turns local memory into public art. Paco, an environmental engineer, works to restore the land while building systems independent of the state. And Geno, one of the rebellion’s first organizers, looks back on the cost of standing up, and what it takes to keep going.

Enraizados (Our Roots Remain)

“Enraizados” captures the compelling story of Cherán, a P’urhépecha indigenous town in Mexico, rising against illegal logging to achieve self-determination and environmental revival. Amidst the global climate crisis, the film highlights the town’s path to autonomy as a model for sustainable living, showcasing Cherán’s enduring legacy, the challenges it faces, and its role as a beacon for community-driven environmental action.

Zag, the araucaria, is a funny-looking tree. But behind its whimsical look lies the heart and purpose of an ambitious mission led by a Xokleng family from Southern Brasil. Zágbág and Isabela are on a journey to save the endangered Araucaria tree, once abundant in their land and vital for sustenance and spiritual connection, now stands as a symbol of what could be lost forever. Together with Yoko, a determined elder standing her ground on contested land, they fight for the survival of their culture, facing relentless deforestation and conflicts over land ownership. But the deepest challenge they face is embracing a mission that may not bear fruit in their own lifetimes. The film searches for this answer throughout, beginning with self-identity but evolving into a multi-layered narrative that encompasses past and future generations, as well as the collective identity of an entire community. It traces the struggle between preserving tradition and confronting modern pressures, showing the unwavering spirit of a people determined to reclaim their place in the world. Interwoven with love and spiritual connection, this documentary is an urgent call to listen to those who live in a sacred relationship with the natural world. The Xokleng people have decided to show us the way. This is a story of a tree and the deep roots of a community.

Zag - Tall Trees Have Deep Roots

“Zag: Tall Trees Need Deep Roots” tells the story of Xokleng land defenders Zágbág and Isabela and their efforts to save Zag trees in Southern Brazil. The film explores the conflict between contemporary pressures of deforestation and resource exploitation, and the unwavering spirit of a community fighting for their place in this world. It’s a story of resilience, and an urgent call to listen to those in a sacred relationship with the natural world.
