The Radical (2023) Muhsin Hendricks is the world's first openly gay imam. Despite opposition, he established a radically inclusive mosque in Cape Town. Now, he fights for LGBTQ Muslims to be embraced in the countries where their existence is outlawed. The Radical is an intimate portrait of Muhsin Hendricks: a fashion designer in Cape Town, South Africa, who became the world's first openly gay imam; a Muslim religious leader. Despite death threats and opposition, he established the radically-inclusive mosque that started the global queer Muslim network. The film provides first-person accounts of growing up queer in a society caught between the liberalism of the South African Constitution and the conservativeness of its cultures and history. In the wider African context, it chronicles individual journeys to acceptance amidst the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights. An intimate portrait of Muhsin Hendricks, the world’s first openly gay imam, who, despite death threats, established the radically-inclusive mosque in South Africa that gave rise to the global Queer Muslim movement.LONG SYNOPSISTHE RADICAL is an intimate portrait of the world’s first openly gay imam. Muhsin Hendricks was a fashion designer in South Africa, who struggled to reconcile his sexuality with his faith. He studied in Pakistan to become an imam—a religious leader—so that he could understand Islam more deeply. After deciding that he had to be truthful to himself and the world, he came out in 1995, and established the radically-inclusive mosque in Cape Town that gave rise to the global queer Muslim network. Today, Hendricks leads a devoted group of LGBTQ+ Muslims and allies, based in a working-class neighborhood of the city. He decides to take his work to where it is needed most: the East African communities living under anti-LGBTQ+ laws. The film provides first-person accounts of growing up queer in a society caught between the liberalism of the South African Constitution and the conservativeness of its cultures and history. In the wider African context, it chronicles individual journeys to acceptance amidst the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights on the continent.Director Richard Finn GregoryCo-Writers Richard Finn Gregory, Khalid Shamis, S.A.G.E.Producer Richard Finn GregoryExecutive Producer Daniel KarslakeEditors Khalid Shamis, S.A.G.E.

Falling from the Straight and Narrow (2026) A stark and honest examination of coming out later in life and what it's like to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community in the world of MAGA A word about Falling From the Straight and Narrow from Writer/Director James Yaw: This screenplay started out life as a monologue written for a live performance in Sedona, Arizona called The Awesome Difficult Work of Love. That show brought together people from various walks of life to talk about learning to love themselves through personal struggles. It was vulnerable and cathartic to stand in that spotlight and open my closet door. I realized there was another character that informed the conflict so I reworked it as the screenplay for Falling From The Straight and Narrow. The Agent (played beautifully by Garrett Rader) is the embodiment of society as it desperately tries to keep my closet door shut and prevent me (and us) from being a danger to the world. Falling From the Straight and Narrow is a stark, honest look at the internal struggles of coming out in America despite the stereotypes and expectations of society especially in the era of MAGA.” Please tell us your motivation for making your film:I wanted to tell the story of coming out later in life and explore the regrets of living a lie in a world that rewards passing as straight. Introduction by Sunkee Angel for Kansas Government (2026) Music Video

Kansas Government (2026) Kansas Government’ is a bold, lyrical exploration of the challenges faced by trans individuals in Kansas, confronting restrictive legislation like SB 244. The song delves into the state’s efforts to force trans people to change IDs and restrict access to spaces like restrooms, offering an empowering call for visibility, dignity, and change. DIRECTOR BIO - Sunkee Angel Sunkee Angel is an internationally recognized transgender filmmaker, recording artist, media personality, and advocate based in Los Angeles, California. Through music, film, digital media, and public commentary, Angel has built a platform that combines entertainment with social impact, creating work that challenges cultural narratives and amplifies transgender voices. As the founder of TransAlien Studios, Angel has developed projects that explore identity, politics, religion, media representation, and LGBTQ+ visibility through a unique blend of storytelling, satire, and personal experience. Her work has reached audiences across multiple platforms and has been recognized for its willingness to engage difficult conversations while remaining accessible and thought-provoking. Angel continues to expand her creative reach through music, film, digital media, and a forthcoming podcast, The Transgender Perspective, currently in development.Angel’s creative mission centers on empowering marginalized communities, encouraging critical thinking, and fostering dialogue through art. Her films and visual projects often blur the lines between music video, documentary-style commentary, and social critique.Kansas Government continues that tradition, using bold imagery and unapologetic storytelling to examine the intersection of politics, identity, and public perception in contemporary America. DIRECTOR STATEMENT - Sunkee AngelKansas Government was inspired by the ongoing legislative efforts targeting transgender people in Kansas, particularly policies affecting gender markers on identification documents and broader attempts to restrict transgender people from living authentically. As a transgender woman, I watched these developments unfold and felt compelled to respond through the medium I know best: music and visual storytelling. The song serves as both a critique and a conversation. It challenges the idea that transgender people are a threat to society while highlighting the real-world impact government decisions can have on everyday lives. Too often, transgender people become political talking points rather than human beings with families, dreams, careers, and the simple desire to exist in peace.Through satire, performance, and unapologetic self-expression, Kansas Government pushes back against narratives that seek to erase or redefine transgender identities. The visual component amplifies that message by blending symbolism, confidence, and commentary to create a work that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.This project is not simply about Kansas. It is about a larger pattern of political and cultural efforts aimed at transgender communities across the country. By transforming frustration into art, I wanted to create something that encourages audiences to think critically about the consequences of these policies while recognizing the humanity of the people most affected by them.At its core, Kansas Government is a declaration of visibility, resilience, and self-determination. It is a reminder that transgender people are not an agenda, a headline, or a political strategy—we are human beings, and our stories deserve to be told. Please tell us your motivation for making your film:My motivation for creating ‘Kansas Government’ was to amplify the voices of trans individuals facing legislative oppression. Through music and visual storytelling, I wanted to confront harmful policies like Kansas’s SB 244, which restrict trans rights and dignity. This project is both personal and universal, aiming to spark awareness, challenge societal norms, and inspire dialogue around trans experiences in today’s political climate. What are the themes and central messages you wanted to convey with your submission?:The themes center on trans visibility, resilience, and the fight against legislative erasure. The core message is that trans individuals deserve dignity, autonomy, and equal rights. By confronting harmful policies like SB 244, I aim to spark awareness and solidarity, while offering a hopeful call for societal change and human connection. His artistic journey commenced at a young age, deeply entwined with various disciplines, including drawing, painting, and sculpture. Notably, sculpture emerged as his primary focus early in his creative development.Morais entered the realm of graffiti and mural painting during his formative years, where he cultivated a unique style of expression that garnered the attention of commercial brands seeking artistic and advertising collaborations. This early exposure facilitated his transition into the fields of decoration and theatrical stage design, where he successfully led teams on projects across Spain and Portugal, even before completing his secondary education.Throughout his career in Fine Arts, Morais adeptly navigated various professional realms, including scenography, painting, and illustration in both Galicia and Portugal. His multifaceted experiences culminated in a series of collaborative projects, painting exhibitions, and advertising campaigns. He also spearheaded a collective of emerging artists known as New Order Productions, which enriched his artistic repertoire and honed his leadership capabilities, qualities that would later empower him to venture into the field of animation following his graduation from the Faculty of Fine Arts.In 2010, Morais premiered his inaugural animated short film, The Painter of Skies, as the capstone project for his Master's degree in animation. The film garnered significant national and international acclaim, achieving selection in over 300 festivals and amassing 125 awards globally. This transformative experience served as a catalyst for a series of travels to esteemed studios and production companies across Portugal, India, England, Italy, and Germany. Throughout this journey, he immersed himself in a variety of projects that not only broadened his skill set in production design, animation, modeling, and kinematics but also significantly enhanced his professional reputation within the animation industry. Each engagement provided unique insights and opportunities for collaboration, ultimately contributing to his comprehensive understanding and mastery of the field. Director Statement - Jorge Morais ValleI believe that animation has the power to transcend boundaries and connect people on a deeper level. Through my work, I aim to explore complex themes and emotions that resonate with viewers of all ages. I am committed to bringing diverse voices and perspectives to the forefront, and using the medium of animation to spark conversation and foster empathy.I believe that animation is a powerful tool for storytelling, and I strive to push the boundaries of what is possible in the medium. I am constantly seeking new ways to innovate and challenge myself creatively, in order to create work that is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. My goal is to create animation that not only entertains, but also leaves a lasting impact on its audience, challenging them to think critically and feel deeply.I am dedicated to creating stories that are inclusive, thoughtful, and thought-provoking. I strive to create characters that are diverse, complex, and authentically represented. I believe that by centering the stories of underrepresented communities, we can create a more inclusive and empathetic world.Above all, I aspire to create animation that is meaningful, inspiring, and memorable. I am committed to using my platform as a filmmaker to shine a light on important and often overlooked stories, and to create work that has a lasting impact. Through my animation projects, I hope to inspire others to think, feel, and connect with each other in a deeper and more meaningful way._ Jorge Morais *** Psychological Development in the Project ***By Adele Baker, University of Edinburgh, School of PhilosophyTeaching children to effectively manage their emotions is arguably one of the most invaluable gifts we can offer them, serving as a fundamental tool for their growth as individuals. Throughout this journey, children begin to comprehend their emotional landscape, making it essential for us to closely observe their behaviors. The short film In Half primarily explores the emotions of fear and love. While it is common to equate the opposite of love with hate, these two extremes are actually unrelated. In truth, fear stands as love's true antithesis. Renowned Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung posits that we all harbor certain traits that we conceal; from an early age, we learn that such concealment is necessary for acceptance. These unacknowledged traits become our "shadow," emerging at various stages in our lives. In conjunction with this shadow, we develop what Freud referred to as the "ideal self"__a mask we create to blend into our surroundings and avoid rejection. The inability to accept our shadow can lead to various issues, including trauma. When we struggle to embrace ourselves out of fear, we find it difficult to love ourselves. Fear indeed represents the antithesis of love. We are often unable to love ourselves due to our fear of self-identity, which in turn complicates our capacity to extend love to others. This philosophy of navigating the world—sometimes successfully, yet always with effort—is poignantly illustrated in the animated short film In Half, written and directed by Jorge Morais. The narrative captures the internal struggle of a five-year-old boy as he grapples with the emotional barriers erected by fear.Young Vivencio, a cheerful and imaginative child, is raised under the strict discipline of his father, Mr. Crabby. His father's unconventional teaching methods and values create significant emotional turmoil for Vivencio, distancing him from his mother and prompting him to confront his fears through introspection. It is within this inner journey that he learns the importance of facing challenges by breaking free from the metaphorical cage that confines him, striving to resolve his dilemmas through logic. The film also highlights a vital theme: Vivencio's progression through his projected fears is rooted in the innocence he embodies. This innocence allows him to perceive the world through a unique lens, distinct from that of most adults, as he marvels at everything and learns in a pure, stereotype-free manner.By the film's conclusion, accompanied by meticulous, beautiful, and sensitive animation, we are reminded of the crucial role that role models and parental love play in a child's education. Whether through imposing their own path or fostering personal growth, parental guidance is indispensable. It is important to dismiss the notion that children must suffer or navigate life flawlessly; such beliefs should not result in the restriction of their freedom. As previously mentioned, it is often these "dangers" or challenges that enable us to develop our best adaptive capacities, as well as our unique perspectives and decision-making abilities.Ultimately, the character of the child imparts profound lessons, one of the most significant being that the fear of fear is a constant companion throughout our lives. Overcoming this fear lies not merely in acts of bravery or courage, but in the emotional maturity cultivated from childhood experiences. The final message of this short film serves as a poignant reminder for adults: we must not allow our inner child to fade, as it occupies a vital space within our hearts. Embracing this inner child enables us to view the world with wonder and joy, empowering us to confront any challenge that life presents. https://theatlantisawards.com/atlantis-awards-spotlight-jorge-morais-valle-in-half/

Poetically merging archival photographs and present day footage from a community drag show, the film commemorates her legacy and the community she was able to foster. Not being from New Hope, it has been vital for me to work with collaborators Phoebe Manntrappe (reigning Miss New Hope) and Miss Pumpkin. NHC has served to hold me accountable to the community. I have also attended community events, spoken with many local community members and had conversations with NHC about how to best celebrate Mother.Through conversations about the impact of Mother Cavallucci, what came to the forefront was the void that she left when she passed. The weddings she would put together ended and so too did a vital community space. Phoebe Manntrappe and Miss Pumpkin produced the show that serves as the heart of the film, creating a space for intergenerational community members to collectively commemorate and learn about Mother.DCFMAYDQ is a labor of love. The crew was majority LGBTQIA+, women or nonbinary folks, and people of color. Being a nonbinary filmmaker, I resonate with Mother Cavallucci's story deeply. She was someone who brought together a community in a time where dressing in drag and being gender expansive were a criminal offense. It is an honor to tell the story of an ancestor that gave so much back to her small town to make it a place that is now friendly for people like me. Bombacha (2025) Edu, is a young Brazilian Drag Queen in Buenos Aires' underground nightlife. He dreams of a grander life: Europe, romance, and transitioning into the woman he sometimes sees in the mirror. A marriage of convenience with a Dutch man offers him hope, but in the Netherlands his dreams crumble. Returning to Buenos Aires he finds his old life unrecognizable. Struggling with identity and love, Edu questions his place in drag and whether the roles he’s played reflect who he truly is. Bombacha definitions:Rural Garment: In Argentina and Uruguay, loose-fitting, baggy trousers—gathered at the ankles—traditionally worn for rural work are called *bombachas gauchas*. Women's intimate apparel: In countries of the Southern Cone (such as Argentina, Uruguay, and Bolivia), this refers to the undergarment that covers the genital area and the buttocks. Elsewhere, it is known as *braga*, *panty*, or *calzón*.

He multitasks directing, producing, editing, and writing to be able to shoot his movies without proper support.Thiago's work explores personal and local LGBTQIAP+ stories, blending drama, fantasy, and horror genres.- Filmography:Thiago debuted with "Thy Kingdom Come" (2014), a successful no-budget short film. He then achieved further success with "Melody of Darkness" (2016) and "Before Today" (2017). Subsequently, he was invited to direct the short film "Drawing" (2018) and produced "Memoirs of the (Non)existent Me" (2021) and "Mortal Enemies and Other Nonsense" (2023) through competitive production grants.- Achievements:Thiago's accolades include recognition at festivals such as the 46th Gramado Film Fest, Brazil's most traditional festival, and selections in over 30 countries, including venues like the Leeds International Film Festival, Inside Out Toronto, and Outfest Fusion, as well as television broadcasts. His work was televisionised several times and he is also a member of the Brazilian Film Academy. Director Statement"LINGER" challenges the typical melancholic portrayal of LGBTQIAPN+ elderly in cinema. It's a romantic film that seeks to humanize the community by expanding portrayals of possibilities, normalizing bisexuality, and addressing themes like fidelity and generational heteronormativity.Inspired by my maternal great-grandfather, whom I've never had the chance to meet. He was the only other LGBTQIAP+ figure in my family besides myself, keeping hidden agreements within his heterosexual marriage. Through fiction, I aim to rewrite a part of our family's narrative. The film offers a refreshing, lighter perspective on queer narratives, countering the notion perpetuated throughout my life that queer individuals inevitably end up alone and loveless. Please tell us your motivation for making your film:We wanted to talk about elderly queer people through a positive narrative, with love in it. They also consulted on season two of Star Trek: Prodigy, and are currently writing a queer YA romcom graphic novel for Mad Cave Studios, and another graphic novel that’s still under NDA. They’re regular writers for the Star Trek Adventures and Fallout role-playing games, and were head writers for the 2023 Nebula Awards and the 2021 Hugo Awards ceremonies. They’ve produced award winning scripted podcasts for over a decade at PendantAudio.com with six of their shows cracking Apple Podcasts top 60 all-time most popular scripted sci-fi podcasts. Tilly’s book Begin Transmission: The Trans Allegories of The Matrix is available now, and you can find Tilly’s essays on trans life at TillysTransTuesdays.com. Directors Statement"Long Away" is a film about connection, love, and hope. We didn't set out to shoot this film on Trans Day of Visibility, but that's exactly what happened. We didn’t set out to release this film when trans rights are so under attack worldwide, but that’s exactly what happened. And honestly we're so glad for both of those things, because it couldn't be more meaningful, given the state of things. Because trans art is resistance. It's more important than ever to stand up and say we're here, we're not going anywhere, and our stories matter.

As residents are forced to confront their long-suppressed fears and traumas, unexpected encounters arise amid the chaos—meetings that would never have happened under normal circumstances. With BLINDGÄNGER, award-winning director Kerstin Polte presents a moving and profound drama, brought to life by an outstanding and diverse ensemble cast — including Anne Ratte-Polle, Haley Louise Jones, Bernhard Schütz, Claudia Michelsen, Daniel Sträßer, Karl Markovics, Ivar Wafaei, Lukas von Horbatschewsky, and many more.Like a kaleidoscope of fates, BLINDGÄNGER tells its story with sensitivity, subtle tension, and a touch of warm humor. From various perspectives, the film explores intergenerational trauma, the search for human connection, and unexpected solidarity amidst chaos. With empathy and narrative finesse, the director intertwines personal destinies with the pressing question of emotional resilience in an uncertain world — casting a curious, tender gaze upon what binds us together when everything else seems to fall apart. Director Statement- Kerstin PolteBLINDGÄNGER is a film about crisis – and about what remains possible, despite everything.
Personal, societal, and interpersonal upheavals define our times. Whether in the streets, in politics, or at the dinner table with family –little bombs are ticking everywhere. And yet – or perhaps because of that – this film tells a story of hope in a state of emergency.
What happens when, in spite of fear, anger, and disorientation, we move toward one another?
When we don't look away, but choose to see – maybe even with a small smile? The film explores the tensions that simmer beneath the surface – in relationships, within ourselves, in our attempts to live together. It’s about people who are strangers – and who, in a moment of deepest uncertainty, suddenly recognize each other. And yes, sometimes things explode. But sometimes, something new is born. Something tender. A connection where once there was only distance. For me, BLINDGÄNGER is deeply personal. My own family history echoes throughout it.And at the same time, the film is bigger than I am. It’s the result of a collaborative adventure with people
who became family along the way. Together we told stories, laughed, cried, improvised – and created a film that doesn’t strive for perfection, but for life. A kind of survival song. A puzzle made of courage, failure, new beginnings – and a whole lot of hope.Because sometimes, a single glance is enough. A “Hello.” A sincere “How are you?”Because who knows – maybe there’s a rabbit sitting in the shop window. Please tell us your motivation for making your film:BLINDGÄNGER grew out of something deeply personal — my own family history resonates throughout the film — but it became something larger than myself. We live in a world where small bombs are ticking everywhere: at the dinner table, in politics, on the street. I wanted to make a film that doesn't look away from that reality, but refuses to surrender to it. My motivation was to tell a story of resilience and humanity that is honest rather than sentimental, and alive rather than perfect. And the way we made it was inseparable from what the film is about. With a team that was 80% FLINTA* and queer, working on a low budget but with enormous collective commitment, the process itself became part of the film's DNA. The trust, the vulnerability, the creativity born out of limitation — all of that is woven into every frame. This film was a collaborative adventure — we laughed, cried, improvised together — and the people who made it became my family. It is a kind of survival song. A puzzle of courage, failure, and new beginnings. Because sometimes all it takes is a glance, a "hello," a genuine "how are you?" — and we almost missed each other entirely. *Women, Lesbian, Inter, Non-binary, Trans and Agender What are the themes and central messages you wanted to convey with your submission?:Highly Explosive uses the discovery of an unexploded WWII bomb in Hamburg as a metaphor for the buried traumas, fears, and longings we carry within us — individually and collectively. The film explores how personal, social, and interpersonal ruptures define our times: loneliness, mistrust, illness, displacement, grief, and the quiet violence of being unseen. Yet at its heart, it is a film about hope and human connection. Through a kaleidoscope of interwoven fates — queer, diverse, multigenerational — Highly Explosive asks: what happens when, despite fear and disorientation, we turn toward each other rather than away? The central message is both simple and urgent: solidarity, warmth, and genuine attention are not small things. They can be lifelines. Plant Based (2025)A character-driven dramedy set in a small Connecticut town that finds itself divided when a proposed marijuana dispensary—Plant Based—sparks an unexpected civic uproar.Inspired by the tensions that arise when modern policies meet long-standing local identities, the series explores community, change, and the surprising alliances that form when a town must confront what it really values. The pilot introduces an ensemble of residents who each see the store as either a threat, an opportunity, or a mirror held up to their own personal crossroads. Through humor and grounded storytelling, the series aims to balance heartfelt drama with the eccentricities and charm of small-town life. While the conflict begins with a dispensary, the show ultimately examines how communities evolve—and what happens when people who have lived side-by-side for decades are forced to actually listen to one another. XX+XY (2022)Being a teenager is hard! How are you meant to navigate hormones, crushes, annoying family and schoolwork? But Jay’s got it even harder: joining a new school and trying to understand their body as they go through puberty as an intersex person. Luckily, they’ve got the support of old friend Sera, and a burgeoning new friendship with popular boy Wooram. But as hormones rage, the trio’s friendship becomes a very messy love triangle. Who will Jay choose and does who they’re attracted to dictate who they are? Born with both XX +XY chromosomes, Jay goes to a public high school when faced with choosing a gender. Jay hopes that by studying the boys and girls at the school, Jay can figure out which decision to make. But contrary to expectations, Jay's school life turns out to be more confusing than ever.Jay's childhood friend Sera makes a secret proposal to have the perfect first sexual experience together. To complicate things even more, Jay's classmate Wooram confesses his feelings for Jay. To make matters worse, the radio DJ Hwama suddenly shows up and threatens to reveal Jay's identity. What decision will Jay make in the midst of everything? Director Biography - Soh-Yoon LeeGraduated from the Theater Department at Sungkyunkwan University and completed the filmmaking course at the New York Film Academy. She currently works as a producer at Studio Dragon, a drama production company. Director Statement - Soh-Yoon LeeIt's been a while since LGBT people have appeared in the media. However, the biggest conflict for them has always been how to come out to the older generation. Now I want to move past that problem and talk about the future generation. What would it be like to tell the story of a person who is trying to make a decision for the future instead of hiding out out of fear being caught by their parents or neighbors? What would the person want most? These questions led to the plot of XX +XY.It is the age of choices, and your gender is now something you can choose. The parents of a Canadian child did not specify the gender of their baby so that the baby could choose its own gender when it grew up. Therefore, the baby's sex was listed as "Unknown." On the other hand, for most babies born as intersex, the parents make this decision at birth because they fear that the baby may have difficulties later in life in a world divided into males and females. What if a child can choose a gender and a parent supports the child's decision? If you could choose your gender, could you avoid gender conflict? These questions lead you to follow Jay's story, and the answer is quickly found: not always. Perhaps the root of all problems lies in a lack of respect and consideration. In this world where dichotomous thinking, social pressure to fit individuals into a stereotypical framework, and the attitude of considering something "different" as "wrong" are prevalent, a child born with XX +XY constantly agonizes over one's immature self and the choices they have to make: Who am I? Which is the right choice? Which choice would I not regret? I wanted to show that it is natural for adolescents with immature egos to continue to worry about themselves and the future, rather than dismissing those worries as something special. Director Statement - Edie EberhardtI grew up watching and loving 80's horror movies. I specifically was drawn to those that could evoke some type of actual fear in the back of my brain. I hope that the re-telling of something that happened to me on a dark road in the middle of nowhere can evoke that in at least a couple of viewers. Our actors put a lot of miles on that old truck and turned around in so many of our neighbors' driveways that we're lucky they didn't call the law. My hope is that our viewers remember this tale when they're on a dark, lonely highway. Don't stop, keeping going, and for goodness sake, DON'T TURN AROUND!!!

I've also called Southern California and Symsonia, Kentucky—often referred to as Slabtown—my homes at different points in my life.Venturing into Film: While this is my first foray into the world of filmmaking, the desire to be involved in acting has always simmered within me. High Grass Hideout Studios offered me the opportunity to take the plunge and learn the ins and outs of every aspect of making a film. It's been an eye-opening journey, not only in terms of filmmaking's many facets but also in discovering that my patience has its limits!Educational Background: My academic pursuits led me to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a focus on painting, a testament to my love for artistic expression.Day Job: By day, I serve as a Legal Assistant in the Real Estate Department at a local Attorney Firm, bringing order to the complexities of the legal world.High Grass Hideout Studios: What I find most rewarding about working with High Grass Hideout Studios is the exhilaration of bringing stories to life. At the end of the day, we're taking ideas that have lived solely in our minds and turning them into tangible, visual creations. It's a profound satisfaction to witness something that was once confined to our heads now shared with the world.Fun Fact: Here's a surprising tidbit about me—I held the prestigious position of first chair flute in my high school band during both my Junior and Senior years. It's a testament to the multifaceted nature of my interests and talents, just like my journey into the world of filmmaking with High Grass Hideout Studios. Edie Eberhardt, Director StatementI was a teenager in the ‘80s. That may be all I need to say, but I’ll explain, nonetheless. My mother used to bring me a new rented VHS of a different horror movie every Friday night on her way home from work. I cut my teeth on some of the cheesiest, goretastic, and best acted B horror movies in existence. I also loved a good comedy. When those two collided, I was in heaven. My vision as a brand-new director is to make a visually compelling movie on a shoestring budget. I want color to be a main actor. I want people to feel how eerie it is to be alone out in the middle of nowhere. I also want people to walk away chuckling and having scenes play over in their minds like a catchy song. Horror is a natural choice for my vision. It’s a comfortable genre and allows for so much creativity, without having such rigid guidelines. I intend on breaking the rules. The Cat Sitter was born out of a film festival. Cinema Systers Film Festival is the only all lesbian film festival in the USA. It’s also in my hometown. While attending a workshop held by Nicole de Meneses, I was encouraged to make a short film. I felt like I was able to make it happen. Nicole kept in touch and really wanted us to succeed. A year and a half later, here we are.In this short horror film, we had no budget. We used our phones for filming. We did buy an H4N Audio recorder for better sound quality. We borrowed a drone and learned how to do everything from writing a script to using a clapper board. This film formed friendships and broke others. This film is the beginning.Thank you for watching. Please tell us your motivation for making your film:We wanted to showcase women in all aspects of film; in front of and behind the camera. What are the themes and central messages you wanted to convey with your submission?:We love horror movies and wanted to show that no budget/ low budget films made by first time filmmakers with no film education could still be entertaining. Lakeview (2024) A queer ensemble comedy set over a weekend at the lake house of a group of lifelong friends A queer comedy about friends gathering for a divorce celebration at a lakeside retreat, exploring their bonds and personal journeys as they deal with life's challenges. When a queer friend group unites for a girls' weekend celebrating a divorce, their old feelings, new relationships, and shifting dynamics crash into each other in the shadow of summer’s dying light.Lakeview is a celebration of the power (and damage) of familiarity, what happens when lessons learned don’t lead to patterns broken, and how one song can change everything you know.Director Biography - Tara ThorneDirector Biography - Tara ThorneTara (she/her) is a recovering journalist in Nova Scotia. She lives in north end Halifax with her cats Winston and Gertie (not pictured).Director Statement - Tara ThorneQueer cinema has reached the point where the story doesn’t have to be about coming out, or the love that dare not speak its name, or an historical event in which we fought for our rights. It can be simply about the messiness of life, how complicated and intimate we can be with each other, that love comes in many forms and offers many functions. Even from within the same relationship, when we don’t agree on what those are. That’s what Lakeview is—a hangout weekend with a group of friends who are ex-partners, -lovers, and maybe -friends by the end of it. It’s about flawed, chaotic, addictive, but fundamentally good women who are just trying to find a little bit of happiness on their own terms. What happens when the sun comes up on a late night soaked in alcohol and shaken by emotional reckonings? We sing alittle song, rinse out the recycling, and keep on living.
