SYNOPSIS:

Since September 2025, Inrap has been conducting excavations, mandated by the French State (DRASSM, Ministry of Culture), across a vast area of the naval base in Toulon. The site, redeveloped over several dozen hectares — both on land and at sea — is intended to host the “New Generation” aircraft carrier (PA-NG project, overseen by the SID Méditerranée, Defence Infrastructure Service, Ministry of the Armed Forces). The first results of the research reveal occupation spanning from Antiquity to the modern era, marked by numerous commercial and port activities. Residential remains, imported ceramics, and military infrastructure testify to the site’s strategic importance throughout the centuries.
